Highways Services are looking for a Highways Inspector to join their team.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?

As a Highways Inspector, you will undertake statutory highway safety inspections of carriageways and footways, investigate requests and complaints received through the Council's asset management and CRM systems, and respond appropriately to highway emergencies.

You will also be responsible for completing inspection records, forms, and witness statements to support the Council's statutory defence of Public Liability Claims. This may involve attending site meetings and court hearings when required.

The role includes assisting with the preparation of work schedules and overseeing works carried out within a designated area. This will involve monitoring cyclic and minor maintenance activities undertaken by both the Council's Operations team and external contractors.

You will also support the delivery of winter maintenance operations, helping to organise works efficiently, supervise activities, and provide instructions to contractors. You will also be required to participate in the out-of-hours winter maintenance rota.

We encourage you to contact Lee Potter via email at lee.potter@durham.gov.uk for an informal discussion about the role.

WHAT WILL I NEED?

  • NVQ Level 3 in a highways-related discipline, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Experience working within a highways maintenance or construction environment, together with knowledge of highway inspection processes and maintenance procedures.
  • Experience of carrying out highway safety inspections would be advantageous.

If successful, you will be required to undertake and pass an in-house driving assessment as part of our pre-employment checks before any offer of appointment can be confirmed.

Interviews will be held on Thursday 20th and Friday 21st August in Meadowfield depot postcode DH7 8XQ

We operate a guaranteed interview scheme for applicants that can show they meet all the essential criteria and have indicated they have a disability, are a looked after young person, care leaver or a veteran.

OUR OFFER TO YOU
We offer a competitive rewards package that includes attractive salaries, a generous annual leave entitlement of 27 days (rising to 32 after five years’ continuous local government service), membership of the excellent contributory career average Local Government Pension Scheme, and a range of flexible working arrangements including hybrid working (home and office) where applicable.
